Orchids 101

Top growers from the South Bay Orchid Society will take turns demonstrating how to repot your orchids, discussing all basic growing issues, and answer your questions. This is for the novice/beginner. You will learn to be a better and more successful orchid grower by the time you leave our show. You will learn:

  • Where to put your orchids
  • How much light
  • When to water
  • How to fertilize
  • What temperatures they can withstand
  • How often they need to be repotted
  • What pots to use
  • What to put in the pot
  • What to do about those roots
  • How to protect against pests

Orchids 102

The following are scheduled demonstrations and are intended for all levels, particularly orchid growers looking to advance their knowledge beyond the basics. Schedule are subject to change.

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

11:00am - Speaker: Dave DeYoung
Dave DeYoung is an accomplished cattleya grower. He will teach you the basic cultural requirements and repotting techniques to successfully grow these hardy and beautiful orchids.

12:30pm - Speaker: Mark Gibble
Mark Gibble of Gibble Nursery grows his orchids in a coconut husk media. He will explain why this is becoming a popular alternative to bark and demonstrate how to repot your orchids.

2:00pm - Speaker: Jim Rowley
Jim Rowley has been growing his orchids using a semi-hydroponic method for many years. This is an easy method that everyone can learn with a little instruction from Jim.

3:30pm - Speaker: Mr. Fertalizer

Chuck Spain, a licensed Pest Control Advisor, will help us identify and eradicate pests that threaten our orchid plants.

1:00pm - Speaker: Nick Braemer
Nick Braemer grows many of his orchids on mounts. He will share his methods of choosing what plants can be mounted and what they will grow well on, as well as the care they need to grow and produce lovely flowers.

2:30pm - Speaker: Jim Weiss
Jim Weiss of The Orchid Garden specializes in cymbidiums. Learn his culture techniques so you can have the best spring blooms.
